In old times these beings were considered the messenger of the Hamat’sa. They were the law-makers in the bighouse during the sacred Tseka (red cedar bark ceremony), and would discipline any initiate or witness of the ceremony for falling out of protocol. They were very feared for being unpredictable an heavy-handed with discipline. Today they are usually used to keep the audience on alert. Usually throwing snot and acting like a fool.

The artist painted this one in a particular old-traditional style color combination. With the original cedar bark neck ring(the sacred red cedar bark). He was once told, “the cheeks tell the story of each mask”. So he placed two salmon roe on the cheeks, not symmetrical. Representing the mother and fathers two unique backgrounds.
