This piece depicts a Cowichan legend that the artist was told about regarding his grandmother’s people.
There was a giant supernatural killer whale feeding on all of the salmon leaving none for the people. The people summoned the Thunder Bird for help. A great battle took place in the sky over the Cowichan people at the mouth of the river at St. Annes. The Thunder Bird had ultimate victory and the people celebrated.
Blue Skies appeared after the Thunder Bird’s victory and so David Gonzales chose to create this piece in a beautiful sky blue and steely grey. Editioned: 191/300
