Description

This Komokwa Mask represents the Chief of the Underworld. The name Komokwa means “The rich one”. His wealth mainly consists of copper, which the artist chose to decorate the mask’s teeth and rings around its eyes. His mouth is carved open and the chin is moveable, with a string to close and open it. On the chin the artist has carved an upside down frog face. Both the chief and the frog have abalone eyes. On the top of the mask is a small loon, which can move both wings up and down. Both of the wings show a piece of abalone. Salmons can be seen on both sides of the Komokwa – their tail ends are moveable. On the top, the sides and the bottom the artist used cedar bark and white feathers to decorate the mask. On the very bottom a string holds the mask together with a small Sea Monster Mask. It has abalone eyes, cedar bark and feathers on top and bottom. Six very beautiful colours enhance this great carving and make it a beautiful showpiece.
