This piece features the Sisiutl which is one of the most powerful crests and mythological creatures on the Northwest Coast, and figures prominently in art, dances and songs. Sisiutl is a powerful and terrifying double-headed serpent that guards the house of the sky people. This creature symbolizes duality and contradiction. It can bring both death and power and has been said to transform into a fish or a canoe. Sisiutl is often called as a spirit helper to make warriors strong and powerful, warriors will often adorn their garments with images of this creature who is said to be able to turn its enemies to stone with a glance. Cedar bark surrounds the sisiutl figure. The face of a killer whale has been attached in the center creating a very three dimensional mask. The two headed sisiutl is carved on top, surrounding the moon.
